What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social networking tool and a website that is part of the web 2.0 movement that has taken over the internet in recent years. To put it simply, Twitter is a form of micro-blogging that has become very popular over the last few months.

What is micro-blogging?

Micro-blogging is the same thing as regular blogging except the size of the average post is a lot smaller. For example, a regular blog post might be hundreds of words long. A blog post on Twitter or a similar micro-blogging website will only be a few sentences long at most. The idea behind micro-blogging is to allow someone to have a running commentary on their life in short snippets for other people to see. Rather than posting a few times a week in large posts, you instead write one or two sentences several times a day.

How much does Twitter cost?

At the current moment, Twitter is a completely free to use service. There appears to be no risk to it accruing a cost at some point in the future because one of the basic principles of web 2.0 is that the sites are free to use. Twitter is able to get millions of dollars from their advertising revenue anyway, so there is no need for them to risk potentially alienating millions of customers by instituting a fee. If they did, some other micro-blogging service would come along with free service and steal all of their online popularity.

Is Twitter easy to use?

It is as easy to use as any blogging service. If you know how to blog in general terms, you should have no trouble jumping right in and using Twitter right away. If you need any help with the finer points of the service, you can refer to their helpful guides to light your way.
